Adventures of the Gummi Bears Cake

Posted on: January 30th, 2010 by lizzo 2 Comments

The makings of a very awesome cake I did for a little girls birthday. I gotta give these parents props for getting their daughter into the classic adventures of gummi bears cartoon instead of letting her watch the cartoons on now-a-days. The Gummi Bears where one of my faves along with Duck Tales and Tale Spin. Ahh memories. Perhaps if my husband and I ever pro-create, it will give me an excuse to buy all those old cartoons and watch them again :)

Here is the process of putting the figures onto the cake so you can get a good look at each.

The first is of the Gummi Glen tree and toadwart. The tree is made from fondant. I made the leaves by rolling large marshmellows in white chocolate then rolling in rice krispies. I attached them with royal icing. This took a long time to dry and get stable enough to put onto the cake so keep that in mind if you attempt your own tree. Let the fondant dry at least a week before adding leaves. I used skewers for the support structure.

It will be hard to top it! All the figures were made individually on lollypop sticks and put on the cake after they dried for a few days.

This was definitely my favorite birthday cake so far. *hums happily…Gummi bearrrrrrrrs… bouncing here and there and everywhere….

Truffle Figures

Holy cow I think I may have met my match in the world of edible figures. I came across this photo on my Tumblr.

How freaking cute are those??

Those are ALL edible! It led me to Ana Fuji’s flickr account where I was just blown away by the talent. She makes these edible toppers to go on truffles. I have never seen such a thing but it is so so right. I just love her attention to detail and the way she captures her characters. I have never seen anyone else do this level of detail in the figures so I am truly in awe.

Freaking amazing. I spent a good amount of time on her flickr looking at all her amazing work and could have chosen a LOT more to post but I tried to keep it to my faves :)

Her attention to detail is so exact. I love it! I really love the little truffle holders too! So cute!

Are you kidding me? How adorable are these?? Wallace and Gromit are one of my faves! She captured these characters so perfectly, I can hardly stand the cuteness lol.

This is just a fabulous idea for a topper. I should def do something like this for my cupcake toppers. I know a lot of my girlfriends would love this.

Her flickr account doesn’t say much about her but it gives contact info if you are interested in contacting Ana for a custom order.

How to make edible trees

Edible Trees

Edible Trees

I was recently contacted to make a cake for a runners 35th birthday. This runner is going to be competing in the upcoming columbia gorge marathon and so we decided to do a cake theme around that event. It took me a while to find a way to make some trees for the cake that would look pretty realistic but were also pretty edible (I do realize that grape stems are not technically edible but its better than wire) I found a couple different techniques that I think worked pretty well and thought I would share them with you. Enjoy!

STEP ONE (gather your supplies)
Two bowls
Rice Krispies Cereal
Chocolate for melting
Floral wire
Grape stems
Sugar ice cream cones
Green food coloring
Spray bottle or food coloring airbrush
Wooden dowel

Step 2 (dying the rice krispies)
Rice Krispies Cereal dyed green. Make sure you use a fairly large bowl so you can shake off excess cereal when dipping without making too much of a mess.
I dyed mine with an airbrush but you can use a spray bottle with water and green dye. Just spray, mix, spray, mix until green. Don’t do too much or you’ll get soggy treats. :)

Step 3 (melting chocolate)
Next we need some melted chocolate. I use tree bark that I get from the food supply store but you can also use any chocolate for candy making. Put chocolate in microwave safe container and melt in 15 sec intervals starting off with 30 seconds. Make sure you stir between heating. if you try to melt too fast and too hot, you will scorch your chocolate, it will seize up and get lumpy and you pretty much have to start over.

Step 4 (Making trees from grape stems)
Gather your grape stems and attach some floral wire to the ends. This will make it easy to hang our trees to dry. Wrap the floral wire around the base and dip stem into chocolate. Shake excess chocolate off the stem so the ‘branches” are easily seen.

Dip your stems into the rice krispies to add “leaves” then hang on your dowel to dry

Step 5 (making the cone trees)
For these trees, the process is similar but instead we are going to use sugar cones to make more evergreen looking trees to give our cake a little variety. You could use something other than green rice krispies if you wanted to like green sprinkles or other candies but I just used the same rice krispies.

I just set these cones on the table over some parchment to dry.

After everything is dry, poke holes into your cake and then push your trees into the holes. I attached the cone trees with some royal icing.
For this cake I also added a path, a sugar runner I made, a river made of melted chocolate and sparkle gel and some chocolate “rocks”

I hope this tutorial was helpful to you.

HAPPY BAKING!
